The bipartisan Alzheimer’s Accountability Act became law as part of the fiscal year 2015 omnibus appropriations bill. The law requires the scientists at the National Institutes of Health to submit an annual Alzheimer’s research budget proposal directly to Congress, thus bypassing the usual bureaucratic budget procedures. This professional judgment budget, also known as the Alzheimer’s Bypass Budget, specifies the resources that scientists need to reach the National Alzheimer’s Plan goal of preventing and effectively treating Alzheimer’s disease by 2025.
Since 2015, the increase in funding has led to innovative research in new methods of diagnosis, brain imaging, and better understanding of how the disease functions in the brain.
With Medicare and Medicaid spending expected to reach $206 Billion in 2022, now is not the time to slow the investment in search of a treatment and cure.
The Alzheimer’s Accountability and Investment Act (HR 7773) would make this Professional Judgment Budget permanent under law continuing to scope and speed to reach the national goals.
Join me urging Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia District 14 to cosponsor HR 7773.
