MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The state softball tournament didn’t start off like the Soddy Daisy Lady Trojans would have liked Tuesday afternoon, but they bounced back in a big way to stay alive on Wednesday morning.
Soddy Daisy lost a heart-breaker to Lexington on Tuesday as the winning run scored late in a 3-2 defeat, but the Lady Trojans were all business on Wednesday against Brighton.
Playing at the Starplex Field No. 1 on Wednesday, the Lady Trojans scored six runs on six hits in the first inning and that was all that was needed as Soddy Daisy advanced with the 6-0 win.
With the win, Soddy Daisy improved to 35-8 and played Gibbs in another consolation game Wednesday afternoon. Unfortunately for the Lady Trojans, an outstanding season is now over following a 9-2 loss to Gibbs.
But in the first inning against Brighton, Tatum Massengale led off with a single before Skylar Gooden reached on a bunt single. Abby Faires then singled to center to load the bases for Ryli Renfro, who promptly ripped a two-run double to drive in Massengale and Gooden.
Regan Rowan grounded to short for the first out to drive in Faires while a double from Jenna Sims drove in Renfro.
Adasyn Wilkey then concluded the scoring with a two-run homer with two outs.
Taylor Lloyd was the winning pitcher as she allowed just one hit in going the distance.
“We came out with our bats on fire in our first game today,” said Soddy Daisy coach Kelsey Nunley-Moore before the last game with Gibbs began.
“We knew we had to take care of business and we did, but we had all the tools we needed to be able to do that,” she added.
