Mary Ann Maffett

Mary Ann Maffett was born on Saturday, September 11, 1943, to the late Harvey and Mattie Hughley.

She accepted Christ, as the Lord of her life, at an early age. She was immersed in the Christian community which became her lifelong support. Mary Ann was a longtime and faithful member of Thompkin Chapel AME Zion church where she sang in the choir, was a Sunday School teacher, and the director of Christian Education for 19 years before her health failed.

Mary Ann was educated in the Chattanooga Public School System and graduated with the 1961 class of Howard High School. Thereafter, she enthusiastically attended Knoxville College where she earned her undergraduate degree and became a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.  She remained an active member for over 50 years. Upon her death, she was a distinguished “Golden Soror.” After graduation, she embarked upon a career as a French teacher at her high school alma mater. As a life-long learner, she continued her education and received a Master’s degree in Guidance and Counseling from The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.  She was an educator at heart who was kind, soft-spoken and always had time to answer a question, or solve a problem. Mary Ann retired from Chattanooga Public Schools after 36 years of service.

Mary Ann Maffett, 78, received a call for an appointment from which she will not be returning. This assignment comes with a huge sign-on bonus, a reunion with family and friends she has not seen in a long time.  She met the heavenly father for her appointment on Sunday, June 26, at 2:08 a.m. after a valiant battle with a long illness. At that appointment, in the presence of her husband and daughter, she peacefully bid this old world goodbye. Her work was done.  Her devotion to her family and her firm belief in God supported her in her struggle and ultimately gave her peace.  She was a blessed woman who led a blessed existence, and she always expressed her gratitude to our Heavenly Father. Her work down here was done.

She was predeceased by her parents, Harvey and Mattie Hughley and sister, Lillian Taylor.

Mary Ann was blessed with a loving family. She married the love of her life, Ithornial Maffett, on May 21, 1966. To that union, a beautiful baby girl, Keisha Genea, was born. She was the joy of their lives. From the very beginning, they dedicated Keisha to God. Mary Ann was a caring and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. She enjoyed spending time with her husband, daughter, and grandchildren. She also enjoyed spending time with her “best friends” and sorority sisters Joyce Gee and Lillian Pinkard. The three ate together, shopped together, traveled together, and prayed together. They would laugh and talk for hours about any and everything. Without fail, no matter the situation, Mary Ann exercised the Golden Rule. Her warm personality, inviting demeanor, compassionate manner, and welcoming spirit was received genuinely by all who knew her. She was someone whose presence made the day brighter and the load easier to bear. Her loving spirit touched many lives, including her Howard High students, leaving a legacy of hope, faith, and charity.

Precious memories linger with Ithornial, her devoted husband of 56 years; loving and caring daughter, Keisha Genea Daniels; grandchildren, Omara Daniels, Omar Daniels, ll, and Omarion Daniels; nieces, Linda McLeod, Janet Taylor and Sandra White; great niece, Christina Lewis; special nieces, Robin Mayes and Deborah Jenkins; special nephew, Joe Maffett, Jr.; great nephew, Korey Lewis; close family friends, Corey Winston and Garland Eastman; best friends, Joyce Gee and Lillian Pinkard; goddaughters, Jamiku Gee and Lisa Pinkard; nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Public viewing will be held from 2-6 p.m., on Friday, July 1, at the funeral home. A funeral service will be held at 12 p.m., on Saturday, July 2, in the chapel of John P. Franklin Funeral Home, 1101 Dodds Ave., 423 622-9995.

Interment will be in Hamilton Memorial Gardens, 5351 Highway 153. Hixson, Tn.
