In a defensive battle in Birmingham, the Mocs fell 1-0 to UAB in the season-opener for both teams at PNC Field. The difference in the match came down to a penalty kick in the second half.
“Tough opening match,” Mocs head coach Gavin McKinney said. “UAB are a good side and they caused us some issues.
That said, we have a committed group who will learn from the experience and push forward.”
Asha Zuniga lined up for the corner and put it just out of the reach of Chattanooga keeper Abbey Saddler who pulled in three saves in 90 minutes between the pipes. The goal came in the 55th minute and defenses for both sides managed to keep it scoreless the rest of the way.
UAB outshot the Mocs 13-4 but managed just four shots on goal to Chattanooga’s two. Zoey Mize was credited with a pair of shots for Chattanooga, both on goal while UAB’s Jessica Wheeler had a game-high four shots with two on goal.
Newcomers Mize and Birna Johannsdottir made the start tonight while Hannah Opie, Clarissa Salinas, and Caroline Richvalsky came off the bench.
“We will now turn our attention to Sunday and get ready for EKU,” McKinney said. “We are excited to play at home for the first time this season.”
Chattanooga falls to 0-1 and will host Eastern Kentucky Sunday afternoon at the UTC Sports Complex in the home opener for the Mocs. The match is set to kick off at 1:00 p.m. and admission is FREE.
