Freddie Mae Mitchell Hollis, 95, of Chattanooga, died on Friday, September 23, 2022.

She was born on May 19, 1927 in Fyffe, Alabama to the late Robert and Roxie Mitchell. She was employed by Peerless Woolen Mills until its closing, and then worked at Standard Coosa Thatcher until her retirement in 1989.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 43 years, Euclid "Coot" Hollis of Chattanooga; daughter, Mary Witt.  She was the last one of the 13 Mitchell children - her brothers and sisters:  Elisha, Hattie, Howard, Beason, Margaret, Arthur, Ulysses, Ruth, Robert, Wilda Ray, Herbert, and Bobbie Faye.

Her childhood was spent working alongside her parents and siblings to provide food and income on the family’s cotton and corn farm during the Great Depression.  Her diligent work ethic remained with her throughout her entire life, always sacrificing for her family to provide not only what they needed but also giving them their hearts’ desire, as much as humanly possible.

Mrs. Hollis’ legacy, along with that of her late husband, included their gardening expertise, planting both beautiful and bountiful vegetable gardens.  After harvest, she preserved the vegetables to enjoy well past the growing season, much like her family did during her childhood.  She also loved her flowers.  She took great pride and enjoyment in watching them grow and develop beautiful blooms.

She was a devoted mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great-great grandmother.  She remembered each and every birthday and anniversary, and made sure everyone else remembered too!

Mrs. Hollis is survived by her son, Bo Hollis of Chattanooga; two daughters, Martha (Doyle) Attaway of Lookout Mountain, GA and Becky (Mickey) McCormick of Chattanooga; son-in-law, Jerry (Judy) Witt of Benton, TN; 9 grandchildren, Kim (David) Richmond of Benton, TN; Taffi (Patrick) McBride of Chattanooga; Kristie (Roger) Ownby of Lafayette, GA; Jennifer Suits Daniel of Rossville, GA; Dusty McCormick of Chattanooga; Denver Attaway of Lookout Mountain, GA; Dr. David Attaway (Margaret) of Seattle, WA; Mary Attaway Vaid (Omar) and Alyson Attaway, all of Brooklyn, New York; 5 great grandchildren, Haley (Steven) Jackson, Will Richmond (Megan), Ben Ownby, Mary Ownby and Raleigh Suits; three great-great grandchildren, Gracie Belle and Caroline Jackson, Aiden Richmond; many nephews and nieces.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, Sept. 25, from 5-8 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 26, from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 27, from 10-11 a.m. at the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home on South Terrace in East Ridge.

The funeral will be Tuesday, Sept. 27, at 11 a.m. officiated by Rev. Dale Kidd with a graveside service to follow at the Chattanooga National Cemetery. Pallbearers are David Richmond, Patrick McBride, Roger Ownby, Dusty McCormick, Denver Attaway, David Attaway, Omar Vaid, Will Richmond, Steven Jackson and Ben Ownby.
