Chickamauga DAR Chapter Commemorates Constitution Week

  • Tuesday, September 27, 2022

Sept. 17-23 was designated Constitution Week in 1955 when the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution petitioned Congress for its observance. The annual celebration was established and signed into law by President Dwight D. Eisenhower on Aug. 2, 1956. Chattanooga’s local Chickamauga Chapter NSDAR (the city’s oldest DAR Chapter) continues the NSDAR commitment to encourage study and public education about the Constitution and its framers.

This year Chickamauga Chapter NSDAR Regent Gayle Burrows and Chapter members, led by the Chapter’s Constitution Week Chairman Trish Mullins, participated in multiple commemorative events, received proclamations, attended ringing of bells, and created public educational displays celebrating the 67th anniversary of the first Constitution Week, the 235th anniversary of the signing of the Constitution and 231st anniversary of the Bill of Rights – Amendments 1-10. The events support NSDAR goals of promoting historic preservation, education, and patriotism.

Chickamauga Chapter members installed extensive educational displays on the Constitution, along with donated Pocket Constitutions for attendees at the Downtown Public Library and the Medal of Honor Heritage Center during Constitution Week. Another exhibit was on display at the UTC Constitution Week Lecture Series. A booth at the Chattanooga Market also commemorated Patriot’s Day along with Constitution Week. Scout meetings and neighborhood events were among venues for the week’s celebrations.

Chapter members and officers attended the Bell Ringing at the Medal of Honor Heritage Center where Tennessee State Representative Greg Martin read an official Tennessee Constitution Week Proclamation. Ms. June Scobee Rodgers joined Chapter Members at their Constitution Week table. John Sevier Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution Vice President Cliff Kent dressed in a Revolutionary War period uniform as he joined Chickamauga Chapter members for the Heritage Center event.
