The Songbirds Foundation is hosting the Songbirds Halloween Smash on Saturday, Oct. 29, at 6 p.m. at the Songbirds Guitar & Pop Culture Museum to benefit their Guitars for Kids program that provides free guitars and music therapy to kids across the south.
The Songbirds Halloween Smash fundraiser will feature a variety of activities featuring famed special effects master Greg Nicotero, nationally-recognized designer Travis Knight, the Pop-Up Project Dancers, live music, and more. Here’s a rundown of what to expect:
A silent auction featuring works by Travis Knight and other artists, as well as movie props donated by Greg Nicotero, and music memorabilia beginning at 6 p.m.
Live music from Dolphin Group at 7 p.m. and Psychic Dungeon at 8:30 p.m.
Pop-up Project Dancers will perform throughout the event
Live painting with Travis Knight and other artists
Special pre-recorded Q&A video with Greg Nicotero at 8 p.m.
Songbirds will announce the question submission period for Greg Nicotero—known for his work on The Walking Dead, Evil Dead 2, Jason Goes to Hell, and Tales from the Darkside: The Movie—on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter in the next few weeks, as well as provide updates on auction items available.
“Halloween is the most rock n’ roll holiday there is… and when you add Greg and Travis into the mix you get something unique,” says Reed Caldwell, executive director at Songbirds. “Our Halloween Smash event will be a creepy good time that helps a great cause. I mean, where else will dressing up like a zombie, buying some art, and having a cold beverage help buy a kid a guitar?”
This special fundraiser will benefit Songbirds’ Guitars for Kids program, which provides free guitars, lessons, and music therapy to kids all over the south. Songbirds recently received a shipment of 1,000 guitars from its new partner Gibson/Epiphone Guitars, which will be used to expand the program to Mississippi, Alabama, Missouri, North Carolina, and Kansas over the next six months.
Songbirds has also started a new initiative called Project: Guitar, which will offer free field trip access to the Songbirds Museum to schools throughout the greater Hamilton County area to participate in STEAM-based classes focusing on all things music– from the science of sound creation to how instruments are made and how to play them, to the art, design, and creativity needed to produce LPs and other recordings. Students will get the opportunity to learn from artists, musicians, historians, luthiers, graphic designers, sound engineers, and technicians to deliver this new curriculum.
