GPS Fall Athletic Teams Earn TSSAA Distinguished Scholastic Achievement Awards

  • Monday, January 30, 2023

The fall athletic season was certainly a memorable one for GPS with a Division II AA State Soccer Championship highlighting a number of successes for the Bruisers. Last week, GPS also learned that its four TSSAA fall sport teams have achieved at a high level in the classroom as well. The Bruisers earned the TSSAA Distinguished Scholastic Achievement Award in cross country, golf, soccer, and volleyball. All four teams received this recognition by having a team GPA of 3.25 or higher, a standard set by the state high school association.

GPS’s four state-sanctioned sports did not just meet this requirement, they exceeded it by a wide margin with each team averaging a GPA of at least a 3.49. The Bruisers’ cross country team, which finished fourth in the state and had two runners—Frances Bohner and Gilly Shumate—earn Division II AA All-State recognition, had the highest classroom mark with a team average of 3.72.

In addition to these team awards, the TSSAA also recognized individual achievement for athletes who complete the semester with a GPA of 3.5 or higher. In the fall of 2022, 46 GPS student-athletes reached this mark, including 28 from the state championship soccer team. There were also eight recognized from cross country, three from golf, and seven from volleyball. Of those 46 total athletes who received individual recognition, 19 had a GPA of at least 4.0.

“We are certainly proud of what our girls were able to achieve in the classroom this fall,” says Jay Watts, Director of Athletics at GPS. “I think these scores speak directly to the strength of the GPS athletic program as well as our entire school. The all-girl environment really allows our athletes to maximize their potential in everything they do. We have an amazing and supportive faculty, and our girls are able to have the best instruction in the classroom as well as on the courts and playing fields.”

COMING SOON:

GPS will honor all our student-athletes on Wednesday, February 1, at 8:30 a.m., with a complimentary breakfast before school to celebrate the 37th annual National Girls & Women in Sports Day. GPS alumna and Athletic Hall of Famer Debbie Bohner Young '79 will speak to the girls and their invited guests. Media are welcome to attend.
