Jackie Lee Vanderpool, 76, of Spring City, Tennessee, passed away at home surrounded by his family on Tuesday, June 13, 2023 after a two-year battle with lung cancer.

Jack, the middle of three siblings, was born to the late William McKinley and Dorothy Elizabeth Hammond Vanderpool on June 29, 1946, at the Tennessee Baptist Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee. As the middle child, he looked up to his late brother William Larry Vanderpool and could always find a way to tease and torment his little sister Brenda. He graduated from Donaldson High School in1963. After high school, he began college at Tennessee Technical University. Shortly after starting college, he joined the United States Navy from January 1965 through June 1969, primarily based at US Navy Mendenhall, England. Upon his exit from the navy, he returned to Knoxville to finish college at the University of Tennessee with a Bachelor of Accounting in 1973. Always an entrepreneur, he dabbled in many business ventures including a blue jean factory in Dixon, Tennessee before settling in Spring City, Tennessee to work for his family’s company, SSM Industries, Inc. in 1984. Jack embraced his Christian faith in June 2000, where he was baptized with his youngest two daughters. He was a loyal member of First Baptist Church, Spring City. He was always ready to tell a big tale, his political opinions but most importantly his faith in God.

After a long courtship, Jack and Phyllis were married on January 1, 1980, in the home of Uncle William C. (Bill) and Aunt Evelyn Vanderpool Hilleary in Spring City, Tennessee. In the years to come, Jack and Phyllis were blessed with three daughters, Rachael (Dean) Gardner of Chattanooga, Tennessee, Ashley (Jamie) Brooks and Sarah (T.J.) Murphy both of Spring City, Tennessee; and 8 grandchildren Olivia and Alaina Gardner, Braden and McKenna Davis, Riley and Landon Brooks, Leland and Jolee Murphy. Jack’s family was always his top priority, annual family vacation a close second. The final twelve days of his life included a staycation with all of his girls and their babies at his home.

Other survivors include his sister Brenda (Mark) Monks of Fayetteville, Tennessee, many nieces, nephews, and cousins each holding onto a special relationship with Jack.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 23, at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Spring City with Rev. Brian Price officiating. Interment will follow in the Spring City Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Friday, June 23, from 1-2 p.m. at the church.
