James Slay
James Davis Slay, a faithful servant of God, devoted husband, loving father, proud veteran, and a pillar of his community, peacefully transitioned to eternal life on September 12, 2023, at the age of 88.
Born on October 31, 1934, James was a man of unwavering faith and service. He proudly served his country in the United States Army and was a diligent and dedicated employee of The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) and RoadTec throughout his working years.
A cornerstone of his community, James was a longtime and devoted member, trustee, and deacon of New Zion Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as both a faithful trustee and deacon. His unwavering commitment to his faith and his church community touched the lives of many.
James was blessed to share his life's journey with his beloved wife of 60 years, Ruth Johnson Slay. Their enduring love and partnership were an inspiration to all who knew them. Together, they nurtured a family that was the pride and joy of their lives. James was a loving and proud father to two children, Lolita Slay and Jayson Slay. He leaves behind a legacy that extends through countless grandchildren and great-grandchildren who were fortunate to be part of his life.
James will be remembered for his kindness, his wisdom, and his unyielding dedication to his family, his country, and his faith. He leaves behind a legacy of love and service that will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to know him. Though James has transitioned to eternal life, his memory will forever live on in the hearts and minds of those he touched.
He is preceded in death by his mother, Mrs. Clara T. Slay; brother, Walter Lee Slay; grandson, Miles Benjamin Slay; and his great grandson, Xavier James Slay-Sutton.
James is survived by his beloved wife, Ruth Johnson Slay; children, Lolita Slay and Jayson Slay; his grandchildren, Ronald (Krista Johns) Slay, Patrick Slay, Christopher Slay, Taylor Slay, Christina Slay and Ashley (Zachariah) Glotta, Marnisa Genevieve, Jayson Slay, Diamond Slay, Kameron Reed, Phoenix Battle, and Brayden Slay; great grandchildren, Ronald Slay, Jr., Esther Glotta, Elijah Slay and Elijah Glotta; and countless other family members and loved ones.
Public viewing will be held from 9-11 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 21, followed by a 11 a.m. funeral service at the New Zion Baptist Church, 809 East M.L. King Blvd. Interment will take place at Chattanooga National Cemetery, gate time 1 p.m.
