Billy “Mac” Jones
Billy “Mac” Jones, 88, passed away on Sunday, November 10, 2024.
He was a faithful member of Maple Grove Baptist Church and a resident of Harrison. Mac was a United States Navy veteran, serving from 1955-1957. He was a professional truck driver, retiring from Teamsters Local 515. Mac was fun and hard-working. He coached youth baseball before going back to his job. Mac enjoyed boating, gardening and mowing grass and was raised milking cows and farming. He helped his father make moonshine in the winter to make ends meet.
One morning, Mac came in from work after driving his truck all night. He was getting ready to go back to work and get stuff done. He started a fire in his backyard burning limbs. The fire department was called, he went and met them in the driveway and asked them how many pieces they wanted the hose cut into. Needless to say, a person Mac knew well came by who worked for the county, that was the end of that.
As long as he was able, he was always helping his sons with their houses, and helping his neighbors. Mac loved his church family. It was the last thing he was able to do that he enjoyed so much – getting ready for church. Then he would ask, “How do I look?” Mac might be very tired, but he would just rest a little while and would be ready to go again for whatever he had to do.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty Sue Jones; son, Glenn Jones; parents, Walter and Irene Jones; grandchildren, Matthew Jones, and Sarah Jones, and brothers, Jim, Elmer and Richard.
Mac is survived by his wife, Dorothy; son, Greg Jones (Pam); grandchildren, Gracie Dones (Hagen Cooper), Meghan Tholken (Will), Michael Jones, Missi Shelton and Mitchell Jones (Maegan), and great-grandchildren, Edward, Ellery, Indie, Kaylee, Zoe and Noah.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, Nov. 14, from 4-8 p.m. at Turner Funeral Home in Chattanooga,. A funeral service will be held on Friday, Nov. 15, at 11 a.m. with Pastor Ronnie Dotson officiating.
Mac will be laid to rest in Chattanooga National Cemetery with military honors.
