Hamilton County Mayor Weston Wamp today announced construction is underway on a series of major improvements to Sam Powell Drive on Signal Mountain. The road serves as the only access route for students and staff at Signal Mountain Middle/High School and thousands of users of Shackleford Ridge County Park.
“This project is exactly the kind of public investment that makes a difference — improving roads and
infrastructure that students, families and hikers depend on every day,” said Mayor Wamp.
“Along with new tennis courts, a new artificial turf field at Signal Mountain High School, as well as a newly resurfaced track, these improvements represent the County leaning into its strengths and supporting its thriving communities.”
Funded through the County Road Improvements Fund, project upgrades include repaving and restriping Sam Powell Drive, re-establishing roadside ditches, restriping school crosswalks and repaving the parking lots near the tennis courts and football stadium.
“So many Signal Mountain families rely on this road every day, and it’s exciting to see these improvements happen,” said District 2 Commissioner Chip Baker, who represents Signal Mountain. “This project reflects the voice of the community and marks the start of meaningful infrastructure progress for countless residents and visitors.”
The initial round of construction is expected to be completed by early August, just in time for the start of the 2025-2026 school year.
“Sam Powell Drive is a major roadway in our community, traveled daily by thousands of Hamilton County Schools students and staff,” said Dr. Justin Robertson, superintendent of Hamilton County Schools. “These much-needed improvements are important steps toward enhancing safety for everyone who uses this route, and we are grateful to the County for recognizing its importance and making this project a priority.”
Sam Powell Drive will remain open to the public throughout the project, with single-lane closures in effect.
