Cameron Tankersley made a strong charge on Thursday to post a 5-under 67 to make the cut in the 119th Southern Amateur being held at The Blessings Golf Club in Johnson, Ark.

The Dickson native who competes collegiately at Ole Miss put together a clean round with five birdies to move into a tie for 8th at 3-under 141, six shots behind the 9-under compiled by leader Garrett Endicott of San Antonio.

Tankersley is joined by Knoxville native and University of Tennessee senior Lance Simpson among the 50 golfers advancing to the the final two rounds. Simpson won last week’s Trans-Mississippi Amateur, another of the seven events comprising the Elite Amateur Series.

Simpson’s efforts to remain alive after an opening round 75 were strengthened by an eagle at hole 15, closing the day at 1-under 71 to rank tied for 38th at 2-over 146.

Other entrants with Tennessee connections weren’t so fortunate in missing the cut line established at 3-over. Clarksville’s Patton Samuels made a ten-shot improvement over his first round in shooting 3-under 69 on Thursday, but his aggregate of 4-over 148 missed by one shot of advancing along with Nashville’s Hudson Wilt.

Tennessee teammates Evan Woosley-Reed of Knoxville and Dickson’s Jackson Herrington finished their two days at 8-over 152, while fellow Vol Josh Hill posted 15-over 159 for the tournament.

Chattanooga’s Rogers Headed To Bandon Dunes

Baylor School rising senior and University of Miami commit Carlee Rogers received some exciting news earlier this week when she was extended an invitation to compete in the 125th U.S. Women’s Amateur August 4-10 staged along the Oregon coast at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort.

Rogers missed by one shot of earning a spot at the qualifier on July 1st at Old Fort Golf Club after posting a round of 3-under 69, relegated to the second alternate position in hopes that a slot would become available.

But Rogers was notified by the USGA that a position is being made available, where she will join Kynadie Adams of Nashville, Karlie Campbell of Ethridge and Tennessee Women’s Amateur champion Isabella Johnson of Murfreesboro as fellow Tennesseans in the field.
