Owners of the popular 1885 Grill in St. Elmo said they have decided to close that location and will open a new restaurant at Chickamauga, Ga.
Owners Miguel and Leslie Morales said, "After much consideration, 1885 Grill announces the immediate closing of its flagship St. Elmo location. Ongoing major building maintenance needs, continued operation without a city- and state-mandated in-ground grease trap, and significant changes to parking costs controlled by the property’s landlords have led to the decision.
"Ownership offered to purchase the building in order to complete the necessary improvements and ensure long-term service to the community. When that offer was declined, additional proposals were made to personally fund the required upgrades. Those proposals were also denied. Collectively, these circumstances made it clear that the parties were no longer aligned in long-term vision and direction.
"While difficult, the decision was made in the best interest of the brand and its team. All current staff members - including hosts, cooks, servers, and bartenders - have been offered positions at the company’s Ooltewah location, as well as at its new restaurant in historic downtown Chickamauga, Ga., in a building recently purchased by ownership. The transition ensures continued employment for the team and uninterrupted hospitality for guests in neighboring communities.
"Founded in 2013, 1885 Grill was established as a neighborhood restaurant and gathering place centered around fresh meats, seasonal vegetables, and thoughtfully crafted drinks. Over the past decade, the restaurant has become a staple in the St. Elmo community, serving as the backdrop for countless celebrations, family dinners, date nights, anniversaries, birthdays, and milestones."
Mr. Morales said, “We have been deeply honored to serve this community. The relationships built within these walls mean more to us than words can fully express. We will forever treasure the extended family we’ve made during our time in St. Elmo.”
While the St. Elmo chapter comes to a close, the company looks forward to its continued presence in Ooltewah and the opening of 1885 Grill in Chickamauga in late spring, he said.
