UTC Women's Tennis Loses In First Round Of SoCon Tournament

  • Thursday, April 18, 2024
The No. 6 seed Chattanooga Mocs women’s tennis team had its season conclude during a tough 4-1 defeat to No. 3 Samford during the quarterfinal round of the Southern Conference Tournament held at Champions Club in Chattanooga, Tenn., on Thursday afternoon.

Chattanooga ends the season 8-14 overall after the tournament defeat. Samford advances to the semifinal round tomorrow and ups its overall record to 10-11 after the win.

A back-and-forth doubles portion of the match saw the two teams split the No.
1 and No. 3 battles as the former was highlighted by a Rozalie Dohnalova and Alice Hall 6-4 victory. The team point came down to the No. 2 battle where Samford escaped with a 7-5 win over the Mocs reps of Emma Peeler and Caroline Gibbens.

In singles, Gibbens kicked off action in the No. 2 hole with a 6-2, 6-2 victory to help UTC pull even in the team tally 1-1. It was all Bulldogs from that point as the team from Birmingham captured victories at the No. 3, No. 6 and No. 5 slots to notch its four points, ultimately resulting in a pair of matches going unfinished.

Tournament action continues at the local Champions Club facility tomorrow and Saturday as a league champion will eventually be crowned.
