Lee Lady Flames Softball Opens Gulf South Tournament Against Choctaws

After missing the Gulf South Conference tournament last season, the Lee University Lady Flames softball team is headed back to Oxford, Ala. as the eight seed. They will take on the Mississippi College Choctaws in the final game of the first day of the tournament.

The Lady Flames are 20-25 on the season and 14-16 in GSC action this season. MC is the #4 team in the country and have won 16 straight games. They are 42-6 overall and 24-6 in GSC action. Lee leads the all-time series over MC 16-12. Lee won the first seven games of the series. Both teams have had four game win streaks since then. This will be the second time the two teams will have met in the GSC Tournament. The last time was a 4-2 MC win in 2017.

The Lady Flames lost two of three to UWF. In the win, Lee scored three runs in the top of the seventh to earn the win and clinch a tournament spot.

Alexa Scalzo is 5th in the GSC in runs scored with 55. She has 59 hits which is 15th best. Her 32 stolen bases is tops in the GSC and 24th in DII.

Lee is has the fifth best batting average in the GSC hitting .322 as a team. Despite playing the fewest amount of games in the GSC, have hit the 60 homeruns. Lee also has the third most stolen bases this season with 92 

Lee is in their first tournament since the 2022 season when they went 2-2.

Mississippi College (MC) is on a 16 game winning streak and are #4 in the NFCA poll. They have not lost since March 30 wiht a 9-10 loss to UWA. Camryn Bailey has a 2.72 ERA and leads the GSC with 166 strikeouts.  In 144 innings pitched, teams are only hitting .217. 

LaFosse leads MC in nine offensive categories. She has 67 hits with 19 doubles and 14 home runs. She has 59 RBI for fifth most in GSC.

The 2024 Gulf South Conference Softball Championship will co-hosted by the City of Oxford with games played at Choccolocco Park in Oxford, Ala. It marks the fifth season the championship has been hosted at Choccolocco Park. The eight-team double elimination tournament will be held May 1-4.
