Clyde “Sug” Raymond Iles, 89, passed away on Sunday, April 28, 2024, with his family by his side.

He was born in Sale Creek on June 12, 1934, son of Clyde and Beatrice (Elsea) Iles. Clyde grew up on a small farm, and graduated from Sale Creek School in 1952, where he played baseball and basketball during his high school years. He was baptized as a Christian in his teens, and joined Mt. Vernon Baptist Church in Sale Creek.

Clyde served in the U.S. Army from 1956 to 1958, as a paratrooper with Company A, 504th Infantry of the 82nd Airborne Division, in Fort Bragg, N.C. He married Patricia Hoffman in 1959, and enjoyed 65 years of marriage. Clyde retired from Combustion Engineering Corp. in 1985 after 33 years of service. He was a former member of Sale Creek Lion's Club.

Clyde enjoyed playing golf as a member of Creeks Bend Golf Club, and Dayton Golf and Country Club, with friends he made through his passion for the game. He was an avid fan of the University of Tennessee athletics. He held season tickets for the Vols football team for over 50 years, attending numerous road games, bowl and championship games.

The most important thing in his life was his family that he loved dearly.

Clyde is survived by wife, Patricia of Sale Creek; sons, Mike (Lea Anne) of Mebane, NC, and Tony (Laurie) of Raleigh, NC, and daughter, Susan (Neil Graham) of Soddy Daisy; sister, Betty Coulter of Sale Creek; grandsons and their families: Philip Iles (Kim) and daughters, Merci, Madison, and Moriah of Hillsborough, NC; Matthew Iles (Kaela) of Las Vegas, NV. Clyde was predeceased by his parents.

The family wishes to thank the doctors, nurses, and medical staff at Memorial Hospital, Hixson, and Life Care Center of Rhea County, for their special care of Clyde.

Visitation will be held from 12-2 p.m. on Thursday, May 2, at Williamson and Sons Funeral Home, 8852 Dayton Pike, Soddy Daisy. Funeral service will be held in the funeral home chapel at 2 p.m., followed by a graveside service at Welsh-Rogers Cemetery, Back Valley Road, Sale Creek.
