Highly Ranked Chess Player Beat Bobby Fisher At One Point

Frank Chavez, 92, died on Thursday, December 22, 2005 in a local nursing
home facility.

He was born in St. Martinsville, LA, but spent most of his life in the New Orleans area. He served in the U. S. Army.

He operated a successful vending machine business in New Orleans. He
traveled extensively with the Merchant Marines as Chief Electrician. He was knowledgeable in many subjects.

He was a highly ranked chess player,
beating the notable Bobby Fisher and other expert players. He thoroughly
enjoyed meeting regularly with his friends in the New Orleans Chess Club.
He moved to Chattanooga, TN when his health declined.

His parents, Frank O. Chavez and Katherine Chauvin Chavez, sisters, Audrey Burris and Marjorie Rosbottom and brother, Dr. Stephen Chavez preceded him in death.

He is survived by his nieces and nephews and many friends.

Much thanks to Hospice of Chattanooga for the care they provided him at home and to the staff of Soddy-Daisy Healthcare center.

A memorial service will be
conducted later with interment in Biloxi National Cemetery.
