James "Jim" McClanahan, 76, of Hixson, died on Saturday, November 3, 2007.
Born in Hayti, Mo., Jim was raised in Kennett, Mo., and was a longtime resident of the Hixson area. He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the U.S. Air Force. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from Memphis State University and his Master’s and Ph.D. from the University of Mississippi at Oxford. Jim retired from DuPont in July of 84.
He then worked in the environmental consulting business and taught at Covenant College. Jim served as an administrator and executive pastor for Central Baptist Church of Hixson and was currently a member of Dallas Bay Baptist Church.
He served on the Chattanooga City School Board and was an active member of the Hixson Kiwanis Club. Jim was a member of the American Chemical Society, the American Association for the Advancement of Science and was past editor of Southern Chemist magazine.
He loved gardening, bird watching, and basketball. Jim was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather who will be greatly missed.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Herman Lee and Sara Nethery McClanahan.
Jim is survived by his wife of 57 years, Betty Greer McClanahan; two daughters, Marcia (Randy) Clark, Peachtree City, Georgia and Melissa (Andy) Sarabia, Hixson; four grandchildren, Sarah Elizabeth Clark and Leah Anne Clark, Grace Maria Sarabia and Amy Victoria Sarabia; two sisters, Sally Tomlinson, Ft. Worth, Tx. and Louise Duncan, Port St. Lucie, Fl.; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home chapel with Rev. David McNabb and Dr. Ron Phillips officiating. Burial will be in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home.
Arrangements are by the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory and Florist.
