The Chattanooga Salvation Army will benefit this week as several local student groups use their Spring Break time to stay home and help others. Sharica Smallwood, the Salvation Army’s director of Volunteer
Services and Special Events, said, “I am excited that we will serve as host
to several mission groups during Chattanooga’s Spring Break Week.”
On Monday, from 10 a.m.-12 p.m., a group of young people from Ooltewah Baptist Church took on landscaping chores at The Salvation Army’s Citadel Corps and Community Center at 1019 North Moore Road. The students also assisted with spring cleaning inside the Community Center.
On Tuesday, the Youth Department of New Covenant Fellowship Church in Brainerd will bring their Praise and Worship Team to the Salvation Army’s ReCreate Café at 800 McCallie Avenue. The team will perform for the homeless people who find daily refuge in the Café while other members of the youth group serve coffee and snacks to the visitors
who gather there from 9-11 a.m.
Finally, on Saturday, the Salvation Army is hosting a Saturday
Spring Fling with the help of Lee University students at the Army’s East
Lake Community Center at 2140 East 28th Street from 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
The “Fling” is a day for East Lake and other local youth to come to the
Center for fellowship, games and music. Lee University students will also apply elbow grease in Spring Cleaning projects at the Community Center.
Ms. Smallwood said, “It warms our hearts when area youth groups
sacrifice their spring break to serve with us. These students are shining
examples of how anyone at any age can make a difference. They could be
anywhere during this time, but they have chosen to help others. And for
that we are grateful.”
