Alexander: Nuclear Regulatory Commission “Making Good Progress” On Approval Of New Nuclear Reactors

  • Friday, March 30, 2012

Senator Lamar Alexander (R-Tn.) on Friday released the following statement on the Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s vote to approve the application of South Carolina Electric & Gas to build two new AP1000 reactors at the V.C. Summer Nuclear Station in South Carolina:

“The commission has made good progress in approving new reactors, and I hope that continues. Nuclear power provides 70 percent of our clean electricity and we need to build at least 100 new nuclear reactors over the next 20 years to provide the massive amounts of low-cost, reliable, clean electricity that American businesses and homes need to thrive in the 21st century.”

The NRC’s vote of approval Friday follows one last month for the Southern Company to build two AP1000 reactors at the Vogtle plant in Augusta, Ga.—the first new approval of a reactor in more than 30 years.
