Duke women’s basketball coach Joanne P. McCallie believes in choices, not chance. She encourages people about making the correct decisions during life’s journey.

Coach McCallie has written a book titled, “Choice not Chance” which chronicles her coaching career from an assistant at Auburn starting in 1988 to head coaching positions at Maine, Michigan State and now Duke.

Much more than a basketball book authored by a coach, Coach McCallie has penned a collection of stories and thoughts about her own ups and downs, disappointments (miscarriage with her first child) and successes in life as a mother, wife and coach and how she has coped with various situations in life.

Book Signing: Coach McCallie will be signing her book Saturday from 1–3 p.m.

at Barnes & Noble at Hamilton Mall.

“I believe that it is important to have one’s philosophy on paper and I feel that this book does that,” said Coach McCallie, 46, who holds a degree in political science from Northwestern and a master’s in business administration from Auburn. “I hope that this is a help to kids, parents, coaches and many others.”

Chattanooga Connection: Coach McCallie has ties to Chattanooga as her husband, John McCallie, is a Chattanooga native, a McCallie School graduate (’68) and currently an economics professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

In the book’s introduction, Coach McCallie writes an open letter to her daughter, Maddie, a high school senior in hopes of encouraging her to make correct choices as she heads off to college in the fall.

A native of Brunswick, Maine and national coach of the year in 2005, McCallie is the first coach in Division I history to lead her team to conference titles and be coach of the year in four different conferences.
