Marshall A. Hildebrand, Jr., 85, a longtime resident of Chattanooga, died on Wednesday, October 2, 2013.  

He was born in Atlanta, on Feb. 17, 1928, to the late Marshall Asbury Hildebrand, Sr. and Bernice Elizabeth Hickman.  

Mr. Hildebrand was a Navy veteran, having served as a signalman and LST Pilot during World War II.

Mr. Hildebrand attended Gordon Military Academy, the Atlanta Art Institute, and was a member of the first graduating class from Southern Polytechnic Institute in Marietta, Ga., where he received his degree in architecture. 

A founding member, longtime fellow, and emeritus member of the Chattanooga Chapter Construction Specifications Institute, The Marshall A. Hildebrand, Jr. Scholarship was named in his honor. 

Mr. Hildebrand was owner and founder of Hildebrand and Associates Architectural Firm. He designed many well-known buildings in Chattanooga including Orange Grove Center, dormitories for the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, Dalewood Jr. High, regional banks and churches, and he received numerous awards from the Masonry Society and the CSI.

Mr. Hildebrand attended Brainerd United Methodist Church since 1958 where he served as a worship leader and a member of the Friendship Sunday School Class. He was a longtime Boy Scout Master for Troop # 9, Shriner, basketball coach, avid model train builder, woodworker and bowl turner, painter, and stained glass maker. He designed and made the stained glass windows for Ronald McDonald House in Chattanooga.

He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Janelle Carnes Hildebrand; five children, Marshall "Skip" (Vicki) Hildebrand of Charlotte, N.C., Sandy (W. David "Bill") McBrayer of Roswell, Ga., David (Sandra) Hildebrand of Peachtree City, Ga., Jim (Connie) Hildebrand of Chattanooga, and Sherri (John) Tanner of Alpharetta, Ga., 10 grandchildren; Scott Hildebrand, Stacy McBrayer Molander, Lauren McBrayer Miller, Angie Hildebrand Cosby, Matthew Hildebrand, Jay Hildebrand, Anna Hildebrand Guessetto, Sarah, Nicole and Jackson Tanner, 10 great-grandchildren, niece, Dottie Carnes Dillard, and several cousins.

A celebration of life service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 4, at the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory & Florist, 404 South Moore Road, with Reverend Dr. Dennis W. Flaugher officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Friendship Sunday School Class.

Interment will be in West View Cemetery in Atlanta, at 12 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5. 

The family will receive friends on Thursday, Oct. 3, from 4-8 p.m. at the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home.
