The Mailboxes Wins Music Competition

  • Monday, December 9, 2013

The Mailboxes, a band of Lee University students and alumni, won ArtistSignal's Top Artist of the Month competition for November.

Mailboxes is led by Lee alum Jillian Ivey who graduated in 2013 with a bachelor's in art and a theatre minor. While at Lee, Ms. Ivey took part in many of Lee's theatre productions, including writing the music for the Lee original play "Lessons," in which she also had a leading role.

Ms. Ivey credits Lee Assistant Professor of Theatre Dan Buck with introducing her to ArtistSignal, and for encouraging her and her band to enter the competition.

"I am a huge fan of The Mailboxes and Jillian in particular," said Mr. Buck. "Her music was a central part of an exciting collaboration last year that resulted in the play Lessons. My whole family loves her CD, my boys took instrument lessons with her, and our family even made a music video to one of her songs. I couldn't be more proud of her success."

ArtistSignal is a social music platform which allows listeners to vote for the Top Artist each month. At the end of every month, a grand prize of $10,000 is awarded to the musician with the most votes.

"It was a long month and we had a lot of help from our friends, family and church family," said Ms. Ivey. "We feel so blessed and are so excited to see what God has in store next."

The Mailboxes is a singer-songwriter music project started by Ivey in 2009. Since then, it has developed into a full band with broad musical influences. Other band members include Lee alumni Caley and Ben Johns, Ivey's husband Logan, and current Lee student James Snider.
