A man has been arrested on child pornography charges in Whitfield County.

On Friday, the Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office arrested a former gymnastics instructor after an investigation revealed he had been sending inappropriate text messages and photographs to a former student, who is currently 15.

William “Billy” Newcom, 38, was a gymnastics instructor for the Creative Arts Guild approximately two years ago when some cheerleaders (13 at the time) from a local middle school attended, training under the direction of Newcom. One of the girls who attended started receiving the messages and photographs from him approximately one month ago. The messages from him included trying to get the teenager to meet him for sex. The incident was brought to the attention of law enforcement after the girl’s mother found the messages on her daughter’s telephone.

Newcom, of Hope Drive, Rock Springs, Ga., was charged with one felony count of computer or electronic pornography and child exploitation prevention. He is currently being held in the Whitfield County Jail. The investigation will continue. It is unknown if there are additional victims.
