Whitfield County Deputy Sheriff Micheal Smitherman has been arrested for DUI.
On Friday at approximately 8 a.m., Patrol Sergeant Smitherman, 44, of the Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office reported to mandatory training for domestic violence, which had been scheduled for patrol supervisors. Upon his arrival at training, a senior officer detected the smell of alcohol on the breath of Sgt. Smitherman. Sgt. Smitherman was requested to take an intoxilyzer test since he had been observed driving his assigned patrol vehicle to the training. The test was administered in the booking department of the sheriff’s office. Upon submitting to the alcohol testing he was determined to be over the legal limit to operate a vehicle.
Sgt. Smitherman was arrested and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol.
Sgt. Smitherman was immediately relieved of duty and placed on administrative leave, pending the conclusion of an administrative investigation by the sheriff’s office. Sgt. Smitherman has been employed by Whitfield County since 2006. He has been released on bond after a local bonding company signed a property bond assuring his appearance in court.
