Chattanooga State's Players Named Applebee's Player Of The Week

  • Tuesday, March 11, 2014

Chattanooga State baseball had an outstanding weekend series this past weekend as they swept the #13 ranked Motlow State Bucks a three game series.  Outstanding hitting and pitching was a plenty for the Tigers as they won by scores of 7-3, 4-1 and 4-0.  Sheldon Brogden ( RS-Fr. Notre Dame HS ) was named Applebee’s Player of the Week for his work along with Freshman LHP Brennan Swindoll for his efforts also.

Brogden went 6 for 10 for the weekend with a double and 3 RBI’s.  He continued his hot hitting after having an outstanding series the previous weekend at Memphis vs. Southwest Tennessee CC.  “Sheldon has been outstanding the past two weeks and we are excited to see his hard work paying off for him and for us” says Head Coach Greg Dennis, “He has a ton of ability and is just now starting to scratch the surface some and find out what he is truly capable of doing on the field”.

Swindoll also had a great weekend last weekend at Memphis where he threw a complete game and shut down the Saluqis.  This weekend though he did even better as he twirled a 1-hit shutout for his 4th win on the young season.  He also had 6 strikeouts and 2 walks.  “Brennan has been really coming on for us and we felt he had the tools to be a solid weekend guy for us” said Dennis, “He continues to improve and command more and more of his pitches and it doesn’t come as any surprise to us that he is doing so well.”

The Tigers are now 11-6 on the season and 6-3 in conference play having won their last 6 in a row.  They play Shorter JV on Monday the 10th at 1 pm a DH and then go north to take on the Senators of Walters State on Friday and Saturday.

The first win on Saturday vs. Motlow State was Head Coach Greg Dennis’ 400th win at Chattanooga State CC.  This also puts him at 749 for his career with the next one giving him 750.

“Sure it was exciting to think about afterwards” said Coach Dennis, “but really it is more of a testimony to the fine players and coaches I have had playing for me and coaching with me.  From Josh Swiney, Jeff Steele, Robert Long, Joe Wingate, Coty Green, Adam Howard…..the list just goes on and on to the wonderful guys that have put in great work to make this program what it is and has continued to become.  Thanks so much to them!!”

Coach Dennis is only in his 11th year at Chatt State and has averaged right at 40 wins per season.
