Lee Women At Wingate Pinehurst Golf Challenge

  • Tuesday, March 25, 2014
Playing on a challenging layout didn't go the way the Lee women’s golf team would have liked, but the same could be said for at least 16 others squads who took part in the 36-hole Wingate Pinehurst Challenge on Sunday and Monday.

"This is one of those tournaments where you walk away thinking the (National Club) course was the real winner," explained Maupin. "It was a difficult layout and they had the final-round pins out today.

"At the end of the day though I think we could have handled it better than we did," he admitted.
"Overall a second-place finish in this field isn't bad; it's just hard to leave knowing we didn't play to our standards. It's an experience that we can learn from though and use it to help us moving forward."

Armstrong State (Savannah, Ga.) rode the strong play of medalist Jenna Birch (76-78 - 154) and second-place finisher Kristen Sammarco (79-77 - 156) to the title. Armstrong posted a team score of 315-323 - 638 to win by 27 strokes over the Lady Flames. Maupin's unit puts up numbers of 329-336 - 665.

Freshman Cori Burns drew praise from Maupin after rounds of 80-79 – 159, earning a fifth-place finish and a spot on the all-tournament team. Cori was a real bright spot for us this week," Maupin added. "She deserved the recognition on the all-tournament team. She played with great focus and resolve this week."

Sophomore Bernadette Little was awarded a spot in the top 10 with an 83-80 - 163. Senior Courtney Shelton tallied an 82-90 – 172, and junior Madison Alexander followed with an 84-89- 173. Junior transfer Callie Kitchens rounds out the field with an 87-88 - 175.

Lee will head for the Agnes McAmis Memorial in Greeneville, Tenn. on April 4 and will be playing on a course they have played on several times over the past two season, the Link Hills Country Club.
