3 City Police Officers Sued Over Incident At Man's Home

  • Wednesday, May 14, 2014

A Circuit Court lawsuit claims that three city of Chattanooga police officers came on a man's property without provocation, then tased him and caused him to fall through a glass window and injure himself.

Steven James Hacker is suing Officers Derek Roncin, Cornelius Gaines and John Watkins.

The suit says last July 25 Officer Roncin was acting "in a crime-suppression capacity" when he followed Hacker home. Hacker has had several prior criminal charges.

It says Officer Roncin continued pursuing Hacker in his yard and garage without stating the offense he had allegedly committed.

The suit says Officer Roncin was joined by the other two officers and they forced their way into his home. It says he was then tased and was cut by the window glass.

Hacker was charged with assault, but that was dismissed at a hearing before General Sessions Court Judge Clarence Shattuck.

The complaint, filed by attorney Robin Flores, asks $100,000 in compensatory damages and $500,000 in punitive damages.
