County Commission Bans Political Signs From Courthouse, Public Grounds

  • Wednesday, July 2, 2014

The County Commission has banned political signs or statements endorsing a candidate from inside or outside county facilities.

The issue arose recently when a letter in support of Criminal Court Clerk Gwen Tidwell was posted six places inside the courthouse by attorney Hank Hill. It included the names of 63 attorneys backing Ms. Tidwell.

Commissioner Larry Henry said he thought there was already such a rule, but it was found that none existed.

Chairman Fred Skillern said courthouse custodians have been told to watch for such postings and take them down immediately.

An exception was made for political signs outside polling places after Commissioner Tim Boyd wondered if it would affect "the 1,000 signs outside the election office."
