The man charged with the destructive rampage through Westview Elementary School was scheduled for a psychiatric evaluation at Moccasin Bend after a hearing before General Sessions Court Judge Gary Starnes on Tuesday afternoon.

Roden faces vandalism, burglary and assault charges.

According to deputies, he told them he had planned "to do as much damage as possible, and then burn the school down."

After deputies found him, he had to be tazed to be apprehended.

Roden was described as "frantic and sweating heavily." He refused to walk so the deputies had to carry him out of the room.

The deputies said they could not carry him further because he was sweating so heavily. They awaited the arrival of paramedics.

During the hearing, Judge Starnes urged him to "be honest and open" with the doctors. He said, "Things in your past are certainly relevant to now."

His mother had said in an "open letter" after his arrest that he had never gotten the mental health treatment he long needed.

His next court appearance will be Nov. 12.
