Review for Once On This Island:

Caribbean dances, capricious gods, and island magic fill the stage in Chattanooga State's Once On This Island.  The musical, based on the novel My Love, My Love by Rosa Guy, is from the TONY Award-winning songwriting team of Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty who brought the hit shows Seussical and Ragtime. Once On This Island garnered eight TONY nominations for its Broadway run, including Best Musical, Book and Score.

Once On This Island has enormous heart and joyous music.  The story follows Ti Moune, the young heroine, as she discovers that love is more powerful and lasting than the forces of prejudice and hatred. During her journey, she encounters pompous gods who play with her fate, a wealthy boy with whom she falls in love, a society that shuns her because she is a peasant girl, and the magic of the islands that transforms and heals.

Once On This Island is directed by Sherry Landrum.  Jennifer Arbogast is musical director.  Lindsay Fussell choreographs. Cast includes:  Prosperity Antoine, Rachel Burdyshaw, Miranda Dyer, L'Shanté Faunteroy, Rudy Foster, Lexi Knowles, Susan Pyle, Jessica Rigsby, Sean Sterling, Peyton West, Christopher Wilson, Jonathan Wilson and Makenzie Young.

Tickets are $15 and can be purchased at the door.  Admission is free for students, faculty and staff of Chattanooga State. The performances will be in the Chattanooga State Humanities Theatre, 4501 Amnicola Hwy. For further information call Rex Knowles at 697-3246.
