11.6-Acre Site Near Brown's Ferry To Be Preserved As Part Of Wauhatchie Battlefield

  • Friday, February 27, 2015

An 11.6-acre site near the historic Brown's Ferry is set to be preserved as part of the Wauhatchie Battlefield.

The Veal Tract, in parcels of 10.6 acres and another acre, is near the end of Brown's Ferry Road. The addresses are 1331 and 1345 Brown's Ferry Road.

John Brown maintained a ferry on the Tennessee River at the end of the road and had his home at Brown's Tavern that still stands. The log home and tavern dates to 1803.

There was significant Civil War activity at Wauhatchie as the Union sought to break the Confederate siege of Chattanooga.

The federal government already owns several Civil War battlefield properties at Wauhatchie.

The city of Chattanooga is being asked to act as the government sponsor and pass-through entity on the project. The matter is due to go before the City Council on Tuesday.

The Civil War Trust is set to purchase and preserve the property.

Officials said the purchase price of the property is $258,250.
