A bill designed to address the need for affordable and workforce housing passed the Tennessee General Assembly on Monday.
The bill sponsored by State Rep. John Ray Clemmons (D-55), (HB 1174), will allow Nashville or any other metropolitan government to contribute real property to non-profits, such as the Barnes Fund for Affordable Housing, for the purpose of developing affordable and workplace housing.
He said, "Most of the properties that would be made available to organizations like the Barnes Fund have already been through a sale process that did not attract any buyers willing to pay even the amounts owed for taxes and, likewise, were not redeemed during the redemption period. By getting these properties in the hands of non-profits for the purpose of developing affording or workplace housing, they will be put to good use and add value to our diverse community, which is preferable to having the government hold and maintain them indefinitely.
"This important legislation is conducive to sustainable growth and is designed to avoid pricing out teachers, nurses, policemen, firemen, metro employees and young professionals who add character to our communities and value to our local economy. While Nashville is currently presently enjoying unprecedented growth and prosperity, it is imperative that we focus on our future and take responsible steps to protect our city’s character and facilitate its continued progress.”
The bill now goes on to Governor Bill Haslam’s desk.
