Willie Mae: Aubrey’s – Not To Be Confused With Opry

It was time for my granddaughter Natalie to marry her intended, so Lou and I came to Chattanooga for their happy day. Actually, the ceremony was going to take place an hour away from Chattanooga, but we stayed with my son Jack and his wife Linda. We were invited to the rehearsal dinner, but I will write about that story the next time because it was a large group and I had a lot of notes.

On this outing, Jack took me and Lou to Aubrey’s in Cleveland, along with his wife Linda. We were trying to find the place so while Jack drove, ol’ Lou was trying to find it on Google (he thinks he is hip with his new phone).

Jack told him the name of the place was Aubrey’s and Lou typed “Opry’s”. Thankfully, Jack found it anyway.

Aubrey’s was a nice place. I am surprised I had never heard of it. Our waitress looked fairly young (at least compared to me) but she kept leaning in whenever we would tell her what we wanted to order.

At first, I thought she was trying to get frisky with my Lou, but then she admitted to not being able to hear very well. Poor dear, I knew just how she felt.

I tried to help her out by leaning her way to give her my order and I ended up getting my make-up on Lou’s sport coat! I tried to brush it off, but that only made it worse. That’s okay, I didn’t like that jacket anyway. It was so loud that I am sure even the waitress could hear it!

At first I wanted the Granny Smith Steak salad. It was a steak-kind-of-day for me as I had just bought new dentures, but instead I went all the way and I ordered the 6 ounce filet mignon for $20.00.

Jack had the 8 ounce Center-Cut Sirloin (I always thought a filet Mignon was the center cut) for $18 and Linda ordered the Citrus-Glazed Salmon for $16. Ol’ Lou decided on the Peanut-Crusted Catfish for $13. I guess peanut crusted is another way of saying “fried”.

Jack and I both ordered our steaks ‘medium’ but his looked a little redder than mine. Know-it-all-Lou said it was because it was a different cut of meat. I didn’t say a word, I just minded my own business.

We did so much visiting with each other, I was afraid I would have nothing to write about so I said, “somebody spill your drink or something!” but then Jack gave me a little more material…as always.

We were discussing where the wedding would be and Jack told us it was in Crandall Georgia. I thought he said Grandall and Jack said, “Yes, the wedding is at the GRANDALL Opry!” and he started laughing. It’s not nice to make fun of old folks.

Aubrey’s was a very nice place without being too pricy. The food was delicious and the service was great. They definitely get a Willie Mae “Whee-ee-doggie!”
