3rd Annual Youth Coon Hunt Scheduled For Overton County

  • Wednesday, September 23, 2015

Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) Officers Andy Barlow and Johnny Poston are planning the third annual Overton County Youth Coon Hunt scheduled for Oct. 9, at the Overton County Fairgrounds from 4:30 p.m. to midnight. The event, sponsored by TWRA along with the Overton County Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation, Overton County Coon Hunters and several other groups, provides a unique experience for youth.

Dating back to pre-settlement times, the sport of raccoon hunting has declined over the past five decades. “Fewer youth are involved in this historical type of hunting. We value sharing this unique sport and providing an opportunity for Tennessee youth to get outdoors,” said Mr. Barlow. “The event exhibits a different type of dog handling. About half the youth involved have never experienced anything like this.”

Youth ages 10 to 16 must have completed the Hunters Safety Course or possess an apprentice hunting license, type 012. Youth ages 13 to 16 must possess a valid hunting license. Dinner will be provided before the hunt. Young hunters will be drawn into cast and each will have a dog handler. Hunts will utilize both private lands and wildlife management areas.

“We’re grateful for the many partners and sponsors for this event. We look forward to seeing kids in the woods,” said Mr. Barlow. Space is limited and anyone interested in participating should contact the Overton County Officers at 615 342-9307 or 615 351-4325.
