Marguerite “Maggie” Ruth Hundley Moses, who was among the first business owners to launch out in what has become a thriving downtown Chattanooga riverfront, died Sunday at her home.

Ms. Moses opened the upscale 212 Market restaurant at the corner of Market and Second at a time when downtown and the riverfront was a place seldom visited.

The restaurant represented the first private investment in the downtown Chattanooga area after the announcement of the Tennessee Aquarium which led the executive director of the Convention and Business Bureau to declare, “God Bless Maggie Moses.”

Born in Geiger, Ala., she was the daughter of the late Morris Hundley and Cora Groover Hundley. She was reared in the Tyner area of Chattanooga. After graduating from the University of Tennessee with a degree in home economics, she enlisted in the U.S. Army where she served as 1st Lieutenant in a forward hospital unit in France, earning two battle stars. Following the end of the war, Maggie moved to New York to earn a master’s degree from Columbia University and worked for Montefiore Hospital. It was there she met and married Dr. Tibor “Ted” Moses, an Air Force dentist. The couple had four children, Frank, Jon, Susan and Sally. As a military family, the Moses family moved frequently, living in a number of states, as well as Japan, Puerto Rico, and the Azores.

In Chattanooga, Ms. Moses worked as director of Nutrition Services for the Southeast Region of the Tennessee Public Health Department. She developed the WIC program and held numerous consulting positions with many health associations during her tenure before retiring in 1989.

She joined daughters, Susan and Sally, opening 212 Market in 1992, working there every day until a few months before her death.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Tibor “Ted” Moses, DDS, as well as a son, Jonathan Moses.

Survivors include her children, Dr. Frank (Margaret Doty) Moses; daughters, Susan and Sally Moses; grandchildren, Sarah, Teddy, and Molly Moses; nephews and nieces, James (Jane) Hundley, DVM; Sandra (Steve) Johnston, AVD; Jenna and Steiph Zargon, Rachel Hundley, and Will and Andrea Johnston.

A graveside service will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Wednesday at Mitzpah Congregation Cemetery, Chattanooga. A gathering of friends and family will follow on Wednesday at 1 p.m. at 212 Market.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Chattanooga Area Brain Injury Association or the American Cancer Society.

Arrangements are by Hamilton Funeral Home & Cremation Services; 4506 Hixson Pike.
