Fire destroyed a home in Hixson on Saturday.
At 11:50 a.m., 911 dispatch received an automatic fire alarm at 2804 Gold Point Circle South. The Dallas Bay Volunteer Fire Department responded and arrived on the scene reporting no fire showing on the front of the house. Once firefighters made it around to the backside of the house, they reported the sun room was fully involved and had collapsed into the basement.
The homeowner, John Coxwell, and family were home and able to escape with no injuries. Due to the frigid temperatures, the Dallas Bay VFD requested a mutual aid response for additional manpower. The Red Bank Fire Department and Sequoyah VFD responded.
The Soddy Daisy Fire Department was on stand-by at Dallas Bay's fire station for any emergency calls in its district.
According to fire officials, the homeowners had a fire going in the fireplace, which was in their sun room on the backside of the house. Fire embers apparently escaped from the chimney wall and traveled through the attic and throughout the rest of the home. Due to windy conditions and a frozen fire hydrant, getting the fire under control and water to this house was a struggle. As a result, the house was a total loss and damages listed at $350,000.
No injuries were reported but Hamilton County EMS was on the scene for any potential injuries to firefighters.
The homeowners were insured and will be staying with family.
