Repairs to the popular Walnut Street Bridge are expected to cost some $12 million over five years.
The City Council on Jan. 12 is set to vote on a $236,000 contract with Volkert and Associates for overseeing the project.
The bridge will remain open during work on the bridge supports, including repairing cracking mortar.
However, it will be closed for a lengthy period during phase II that involves replacing the decking.
The bridge will also be repainted and the lighting will be improved.
The 1891 bridge has been chosen as one of America's top 10 public places.
