"Mike Holtzhower of Southeast Diesel Inc. was interested in 23rd St. beautification and had an inspired idea to animate the street frontage of his business. He contacted Mark Making about recycling a diesel tank on his property, transforming it into a painted 'sculpture' to be installed at the corner of 23rd and S. Orchard Knob Ave. Mike envisioned a flag theme: an image that would take its inspiration from the American flag," officials said.
"Excited to collaborate with him, Mr. Making offered workshops to design individual cut paper compositions to 25 participants from AIM Center and the GLAD program from New City Fellowship Church. Mike selected the composition created by AIM Center member, Rodrick McGee who met several times with Mark Making staff to transfer the design to the tank. AIM Center members returned to paint the tank following Rodrick’s design."
Partners for this project are Southeastern Diesel, New City Fellowship Church, AIM Center, and Mr. Making who funded the work. The lead artist was Rodrick McGee. Workshop teachers were Elena Hatch, Frances McDonald, Judy Mogul, and Alicia Sanders.
Participants who primed the tank were Braylon Davis, Amari Johnson, and Shemari McGibben.
Participants who painted the tank were Robert Waters, Scott Hammond, Rodrick McGee, Shariece Hayes, Elaine Epstein, Miriam Prepodnik, and Kathryn Wright.
