Jo Hill Presents Seven Deadly Sins To Judge David Campbell Chapter DAR

  • Thursday, December 22, 2016

The last meeting of 2016 for the Judge David Campbell Chapter of the DAR was held at the Hamilton Place Holiday Inn. Over 40 members and guests gathered to enjoy a program on the Seven Deadly Sins, a Merry Membership Quiz hosted by Bette Cook, membership chairman for JDC, and a display of crafts made by members.

Marie Wingate and Susan Lindsey displayed quilts for possible entry into the 2017 American Heritage contest. Joyce Shrum showed knitted hats. The American Heritage Committee of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution was established to preserve the American heritage in the fields of art and sculpture, crafts, drama and literature, fiber arts, and music. In the 2016 contest, Ms. Wingate’s entry of a quilt won second place in the state competition.

Guest speaker for the meeting was Jo Hill, NSDAR museum correspondent docent, who presented a "delightful and enlightening" slide show on the Seven Deadly Sins. The slides highlighted the extravagant life style of some early Americans and displayed the finery of the day. Each slide had a theme of one of the sins: pride, envy, wrath, gluttony, lust, sloth and greed. Envy was depicted with a comparison of items found in the home of the wealthy (the haves) and average families (have nots). One example showed furniture and the stark difference in the quality of furnishings in a home. The haves may have use a mahogany wash stand of fine finish whereas a family of less means may have resorted to a pine wash table painted to resemble mahogany. One example of gluttony was represented by Toby jug, an earthenware drinking vessel, painted in brilliant colors and crafted in the form of a stout old man wearing a three-cornered hat.
