Siedlecki Says County Commission Should Pass Senior Tax Relief

  • Tuesday, April 12, 2016

Assessor candidate Mark Siedlecki said the County Commission should pass senior tax relief.

He said, "As Tax Day approaches this week, citizens should know that the state of Tennessee allows counties to offer relief to senior citizen homeowners to protect them from increases in property taxes.

These increases can sometimes force elderly residents to lose their homes through no fault of their own when they are unable to pay higher property taxes.

“It is morally wrong to work your whole life only to be forced from your home due to a tax increase or nearby rising property values. Our County Commission has had almost a decade to enact this important legislation and they have done nothing. When I am elected, I will make it a priority to protect our elderly residents and keep them in their homes.”

He said, "To date, 51 counties and cities in Tennessee have taken advantage of this valuable program, approved by the state’s voters in 2006. Hamilton County still has not, despite the minimal cost to citizens involved. I will continue to push our County Commission to protect seniors."
