“River & Shore: Perspectives on Landscape” Showing At Reflections Gallery Through May 13

  • Wednesday, April 13, 2016

The landscape paintings of Renel Plouffe and James Tucker, as well as the piano artistry of Luke Simmons, will be featured through May 13 in “River & Shore: Perspectives on Landscape” at Reflections Gallery.  An opening reception will be held on Friday, April 29 from 5-7 p.m.

"The showing explores the natural world from two very distinct artistic directions: abstraction and representation. The differences in their work provide the viewer with exciting visual insights, but despite these differences, there are also surprising similarities in the work of the two artists," officials said.

Ms. Plouffe said, “We both try to reveal the essence of the subject in a meaningful way. To me, we are visual poets who express our feelings about a common subject in different languages.”

Bio on Renel Plouffe:

Inspired by her experiences of the natural world, Ms. Plouffe’s abstract expressionist painting does not strive for realism. Her intention is to deconstruct and reconstruct reality, and her methods result in a highly personal interpretation of the subject. “I break down what I see to its visual essentials—light, dark, color, tone, movements, and textures. The result is a reflection of my true essence and outlook. Painting is my speech, my playground, my reality.”   Ms. Plouffe received a degree in fine art and graphic design from the University of Hull (Canada). Her paintings have been shown in numerous galleries, most notably in Montreal, Houston, and Chattanooga. Her work is currently represented by Reflections Gallery.

Bio on James Tucker:

Mr. Tucker’s landscape paintings are based on material he gathers sailing a small boat on the Tennessee River. Calling these works ‘Riverscapes’, he seeks to paint in a way that expresses not only the subject, but how he has emotionally responded to it. “Though the viewer can easily tell what the subject matter is, my art actually centers on my feelings and impressions while on the river. The paintings are my attempt to make those feelings permanent and to share them with others.” Mr. Tucker studied art at the University of Georgia, The Atlanta College of Art, and The Callanwolde Arts Center. His work has been shown in galleries in Atlanta and Chattanooga. He is currently represented by both Reflections Gallery in Chattanooga and Locals in Sewanee, Tn.
