The Highway 58 Volunteer Fire Department and Hamilton County Hazmat officials responded at 10 a.m. on Monday to a vehicle fire and hazardous materials spill at the 6900 block of Highway 58.

When the Highway 58 VFD arrived at the scene, it confirmed a Chevy minivan was involved with fire with a fuel spill on the roadway. It requested the Hamilton County Hazmat team to respond to assist with the containment of the 20 gallons of fuel on the highway.

Chief Brent Massey, Highway 58 VFD, reported the owner of the vehicle explained he was having mechanical problems and the vehicle caught fire while he was driving down the highway. He escaped without an injury.

Firefighters and hazmat officials were able to contain the 20 gallons of gas with oil/gas absorbent boom from spilling into the Chickamauga Lake.
