A scene from The Tempest at Camp Jordan, part of last year's Summer Shakespeare Series. Back Alley Productions is holding auditions for Hamlet.
Back Alley Productions will hold auditions for a traveling production of William Shakespeare’s classic tragedy Hamlet at the Historic Mars Theater, 117 N. Chattanooga St., LaFayette, Monday, June 13, and Tuesday, June 14, from 6:30-8:30 p.m.
The award-winning theater company is seeking actors and actresses ages 15 and up. Candidates will audition in front of the production team. Monologues will be provided onsite. No prior experience is required.
“If you’ve ever wanted to be a Shakespearean actor, now is your chance,” Kaylee Smith, executive director of Back Alley and director of Hamlet said. “There’s no better way to spend the summer than by bringing one of the greatest classics to life. We invite everyone out who has an interest, whether an expert on Shakespeare’s work or someone new to the Bard. Back Alley is a theater company open to everyone and we would love to have you learn with us, while growing your passion for acting.”
Back Alley Productions will bring Hamlet to life as part of its third annual Summer Shakespeare Series, a traveling production that will perform at the Mars Theater, the Northwest Georgia Amphitheater in Ringgold, Coolidge Park in Chattanooga and Camp Jordan in East Ridge. Performances will be held on weekends from Aug. 5-Sept. 3. The theater company performed a traveling version of Macbeth in 2014 and The Tempest in 2015.
The classic focuses on the troubled young Prince Hamlet as he returns home, only to find his family and country have gone awry. His father, the late king, is dead. His mother, Gertrude, has quickly remarried his uncle Claudius, who has taken over the kingdom with little resistance. But Hamlet, fueled by visions of his father’s ghost, sets on a path of revenge and "murder most foul” where he must confront the darkest parts of his own humanity.
