A woman who served seven days at the Silverdale Workhouse, then had a capias issued for her arrest for allegedly not serving the days has filed suit against the Corrections Corporation of America (CCA) that operates the workhouse.
The suit filed by Veronica Ann Fuget, asks $150,000 in damages.
Her attorney, Robin Flores, said, "CCA has a history of holding people beyond release dates and failure to keep track of inmates. This suit is the first one I have filed in response to CCA's custom and practice."
The complaint says Ms. Fuget was to report on three weekends after serving the seven days. It says when she reported for the first weekend that CCA would not let her out due to the capias.
The judge in the case said, “Ms. Fuget apparently was at the workhouse when the workhouse sent notice to the Court that she was not at the workhouse, so it’s an error on the part of the workhouse.”
The judge said in court, “All right. So I’ll call it revocation dismissed, and I’m going to order that Ms. Fuget get released. Let’s make sure that we get that out there to Silverdale ASAP. She should never have been picked up in the first place. The Court should not have received that notice from Silverdale, based on what I’ve been told.”
