John Sanders
John W. Sanders, 80, passed away on Friday, May 12, 2017, after a hard-fought courageous battle with metastatic melanoma.
He retired from TVA after 34 years of working in the divisions of Transmission Planning and Engineering, Energy Use and Distributor Relations, and Corporate Nuclear Engineering. John graduated from North Carolina State University in Civil Engineering, was a lifetime member of ASCE and a registered professional engineer in the state of Tennessee. After retirement, John worked through BVI as a contractor to FEMA for national emergencies.
He served in the U.S. Army and was a former company commander of Co. B 844th Engineering Battalion, USAR in Chattanooga.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John W. Sanders and Lois Cain Sanders, and his sister, Rosa Lee Sanders Merritt, all of Raleigh.
John is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mary Sue Herring Sanders, their children and spouses: Debra Sanders Sturgis (David) - Columbia, South Carolina, Capt.(ret.) John W. Sanders MD (Leigh Ann) – Winston Salem, North Carolina and Jay T. Sanders – Montgomery, Alabama. Grandchildren: LTJG David H. Sturgis Jr, Katie Sanders, Christian Sanders, and Grace Sanders. Nieces and nephews and sister-in-law Laura Pipkin Dowdy.
John was a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church for more than 50 years. He was an ardent supporter of NCSU athletics and had previously served as the Tennessee representative to the Wolfpack Club.
The family will receive friends at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home from 4-7 p.m. on Monday, and 10-11 a.m. on Tuesday.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 16, at the funeral home. Entombment will follow in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.
