A Tale Of Two Worlds: To Israel-Palestine With Love From Chattanooga

  • Sunday, July 2, 2017

During the soiree "A Tale of Two Worlds: To Israel-Palestine With Love From Chattanooga," Gandhi Global Center For Peace & Gandhi's Be Magazine Co-Founder Missy Crutchfield shared about her recent journey to Israel-Palestine for the "End 50 Years of Occupation" delegation in partnership with Center for Jewish Nonviolence in May.

The month of June marked 50 years since the beginning of Israel's occupation of Palestinian territories. To mark this event the Center for Jewish Nonviolence brought together 150 anti-occupation Jews from the United States and around the world to work with Palestinian activists on peace building and nonviolence projects in the hills of Hebron.

Having worked on social justice and human rights issues globally and locally, Ms. Crutchfield sees the Israel-Palestine conflict as having become a metaphor for ending global oppression and apartheid, citing the vision of both Gandhi and Mandela for a peaceful resolution one day.

The Q & A and follow-up conversation rounded out the evening with a dialogue on ending oppression and apartheid globally as well as in Chattanooga focusing on social justice issues here, particularly youth mass incarceration. All of these issues are interconnected, Ms. Crutchfield says.

Also in attendance was Robert Carmel visiting Chattanooga fom Tel Aviv, Israel whose parents are Holocaust survivors and were held in Romanian labor camps during World War II.  Mr. Carmel added an Israeli perspective to the conversation about the Israel-Palestine conflict.

The "A Tale of Two Worlds: To Israel-Palestine With Love From Chattanooga" event was hosted at The Haddock House by Maggie Armstrong of KellerWilliams Realty and Barb Storm of Mountain Arts Community Center.

Gandhi Global Center For Peace will be announcing similar future events and conversations that raise awareness and build collaborations with local leaders, community members, and youth addressing issues of social justice from mass incarceration to Israel-Palestine and beyond.
