International Safety Review Team Visits Sequoyah Nuclear Power Plant

  • Monday, August 14, 2017

An international team of nuclear safety experts will visit the Tennessee Valley Authority’s Sequoyah nuclear power plant from Aug. 14-31 to review operational safety practices at the facility, located near Soddy-Daisy.

The voluntary peer review is coordinated by the International Atomic Energy Agency, based in Vienna, Austria, and is known as an Operational Safety Review Team visit. The team’s 16 members came from Canada, Sweden, the United Kingdom, Slovakia, Belgium, Brazil, Spain, South Korea, France, Romania, Germany, and China.

Established by the IAEA in 1982, the OSART program is designed to assist member states in promoting operational safety of nuclear power plants through the dissemination of good practices. This will be the ninth OSART review of a U.S. nuclear power plant since the program began.

Areas to be covered during the review include, but are not limited to, operational experience, training and qualifications, radiation protection, chemistry, emergency planning and preparedness, and
maintenance.

Once the OSART reviewers have completed their work, they will produce a report identifying best practices and suggesting possible safety improvements. This report will be provided to the Tennessee Valley Authority and the U.S. government.
