Aggravated Child Abuse Charge Filed After 1-Year-Old Found With Broken Bones

Criminal charges have been filed after a one-year-old who was taken to Children's Hospital for fever and fussiness was have to have broken bones.

The mother, Kathleen Dirksen, 24, of 1614 Bennett Ave., was charged with aggravated child abuse.

Her arrest report said her husband, Shawn Dirksen, was a co-defendant, but there was no record of him being booked into the jail.

The child was brought Oct. 3, 2016, and examined by an ER doctor. A bone scan was ordered after a slight bruise was found on the child's thigh. That showed four broken bones, including two newer ones and two older ones starting to heal.

Police said it was determined after a lengthy investigation that the child's injuries "were non accidental trauma and considered child abuse ."
